Description of Vessel

"The British ship "Sarah", Robert C. Tims, master, arrived at New York on 18 July 1850, 38 days from Glasgow. With 229 passengers; 13 in cabins, 181 in steerage and 35 on deck. The passenger manifest, dated the following day, is available on National Archives Microfilm Publication M237, roll 90, No. 790; you can borrow a copy of this microfilm through AGLL, any LDS (Mormon) Family History Center, or Interlibrary Loan.

According to the Registry Ship List at http://www.marmus.ca/marmus/marmus.html, the "Sarah" was a carvel-built, square-rigged ship, 536.95 tons, 128 feet long x 25.6 feet broad x 18.9 feet deep, with a woman figure on the stern. She was built at William Henry, Quebec, by David Vaughan, and was registered at Montreal on 6 and 9 May 1842; she was registered de novo at Glasgow on 25 May 1850. She appears in _Lloyd's Register_ for 1844-1857, as follows:

Master:
     1844-1847 McLean
     1848-1849 Barclay
     1859-1851 R. Tims
     1851-1853 P. Fraser
     1854-1855 W. Smith
     1856-1857 S./P. Plage

Owner and Port of Registry:
     1844-1849 A. Shaw, Montreal
     1850-1857 Reid & Co., Glasgow

Intended Voyage:
     1844-1849 Montreal
     1850-1852 New York
     1853 [none given]
     1854 New York
     1855 [none given]
     1856 Matanzas
     1857 New York
_Lloyd's Register_ for 1858 and subsequent years contains no reference to this vessel, but I have no way of knowing whether she was wrecked or merely "sold foreign".

The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London SE10 9NF, Great Britain, http://www.nmm.ac.uk, may *possibly* have additional information on the "Sarah", although you should not get your hopes up, as she was clearly not a vessel of any importance."
